Taking colchicine and atorvastatin together can increase the risk of muscle problems. This can range from mild muscle aches and weakness to a rare but very serious condition called rhabdomyolysis, where muscle tissue breaks down and can cause kidney damage.

Why this happens
Both drugs are processed by the same enzyme in the liver (CYP3A4) and the same transport protein (P-gp). When taken together, atorvastatin can slow down the removal of colchicine from your body, and both drugs have the potential to cause muscle toxicity independently. This 'double hit' increases the risk of side effects.
What you should do

Seek medical help immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if you also have a fever or dark-coloured urine.
