There is no known interaction between paracetamol and ibuprofen. In fact, they are often taken together or alternated to help manage pain and fever more effectively.

Why this happens
These medicines work in different ways. Paracetamol works mainly in the central nervous system to reduce pain signals and lower temperature. Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that reduces the production of chemicals called prostaglandins that cause pain and inflammation at the site of an injury. Because they target different pathways, they can be used at the same time.

Back to contentsYou can take these two medicines together if needed, but ensure you do not exceed the maximum daily dose for either. Always read the labels carefully, as many cold and flu remedies already contain paracetamol or ibuprofen. It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol when taking paracetamol, as combining them increases the risk of liver damage. Additionally, ibuprofen should ideally be taken with food to protect your stomach.
