Taking Abilify (aripiprazole) and Effexor (venlafaxine) together can increase the risk of a rare but serious condition called serotonin syndrome. It may also increase the levels of Abilify in your blood, making side effects more likely.

Why this happens
Both medicines increase a chemical in the brain called serotonin. If levels get too high, it causes serotonin syndrome. Additionally, Effexor can slow down the way your liver breaks down Abilify, leading to higher levels of the drug in your body.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou should only take these together if prescribed by your doctor. Watch closely for signs of serotonin syndrome, such as shivering, diarrhoea, fever, sweating, severe muscle stiffness, or confusion. If you notice these, seek medical help immediately. Your doctor may need to adjust your doses.
