Taking garlic supplements alongside amlodipine may cause your blood pressure to drop lower than intended. This could make you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or faint, especially when standing up quickly. Garlic may also slightly increase the risk of bruising or bleeding.

Why this happens
Both amlodipine and garlic work to lower blood pressure (amlodipine by relaxing blood vessels and garlic through natural compounds like allicin). When used together, their effects can add up. Additionally, garlic has mild blood-thinning properties which can affect how your blood clots.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before starting garlic supplements while taking amlodipine. If you decide to take both, monitor your blood pressure regularly at home and watch for signs of low blood pressure, such as dizziness or feeling weak. Do not stop taking your prescribed amlodipine without medical advice.

Important precautions
Back to contentsSurgery or dental procedures
Stop taking garlic supplements at least two weeks before any planned surgery. Garlic has significant blood-thinning effects that can cause excessive bleeding during and after procedures.
Severe liver disease
Amlodipine is broken down very slowly by the liver. If you have liver problems, the medicine can build up to toxic levels in your body, requiring a much lower dose and close monitoring.
Food and drink warnings
Back to contentsGrapefruit juice
Grapefruit juice can increase the amount of amlodipine in your blood. This may cause your blood pressure to drop too low and increase the risk of side effects like headaches, flushing, or swollen ankles. While a small glass is unlikely to cause problems for most people, it is best to avoid large amounts.
Alcohol
Both garlic supplements and alcohol can have blood-thinning effects. Consuming them together in large amounts may theoretically increase the risk of bruising or bleeding.
