Why this happens

Both substances work to relax the blood vessels. Amlodipine is a 'calcium channel blocker' that lowers blood pressure by relaxing the muscles in your vessel walls. Magnesium has a similar, natural effect on these same pathways. When used together, their effects can add up, leading to a more pronounced drop in blood pressure.

It is generally safe to take these together, but you should monitor your blood pressure more closely when starting the magnesium supplement. To stay safe, stand up slowly from a sitting or lying position. If you feel very dizzy, fatigued, or experience a racing heart, speak to your GP, as your dose of blood pressure medication may need adjusting.
