Taking bisoprolol and Buscopan (hyoscine butylbromide) together may lead to a conflict in how your heart rate is controlled. Bisoprolol is a beta-blocker used to slow the heart rate and lower blood pressure, while Buscopan can sometimes increase the heart rate as a side effect. This means Buscopan might slightly reduce the heart-slowing benefits of your bisoprolol. Additionally, both medications can occasionally cause side effects like a dry mouth or blurred vision, which might be more noticeable when taken together.

Why this happens
Bisoprolol works by blocking beta-receptors to slow the heart (sympatholytic), whereas Buscopan blocks acetylcholine receptors (antimuscarinic), which can increase the heart rate. These two actions oppose each other (antagonistic effect). There is no evidence that they interfere with how the body absorbs or breaks down the other (pharmacokinetics).
What you should do
Back to contentsIt is generally safe to take these two medicines together, but you should be aware that they have opposite effects on your heart rate. If you notice your heart racing, feel dizzy, or find that your usual blood pressure readings are higher than normal, speak to your doctor or pharmacist. If you experience bothersome dry mouth or blurred vision, mention this at your next check-up.
