Taking zinc at the same time as levothyroxine can stop your thyroid medication from working properly. This is because zinc can attach itself to the levothyroxine in your stomach, preventing your body from absorbing the full dose into your bloodstream. This could lead to your thyroid becoming underactive again, causing symptoms like tiredness, feeling cold, or weight gain.

Why this happens
Zinc is a metal ion that can bind to levothyroxine in the digestive tract, forming a complex that is too large to be absorbed by the body. This reduces the 'bioavailability' (the amount of active medicine available) of the thyroid hormone.
