Taking a multivitamin and turmeric together is generally safe, but there is a small risk of increased blood thinning if your multivitamin contains high doses of Vitamin E or certain herbs like ginseng or ginkgo. Turmeric can also increase the absorption of certain minerals like iron, but it may also interfere with how your body uses iron if taken in very large amounts.

Why this happens
Turmeric contains curcumin, which has mild natural blood-thinning properties. When combined with other substances in a multivitamin that also thin the blood (like Vitamin E), the effect could be additive. Additionally, turmeric can bind to iron in the gut, which might slightly reduce iron absorption in people who are already iron-deficient.
What you should do
Back to contentsIt is generally fine to take these together. However, if you are scheduled for surgery, you should stop taking turmeric at least two ages before the procedure. If you have iron-deficiency anaemia, try to take your multivitamin and turmeric at different times of the day (at least 2 hours apart) to ensure you get the most benefit from the iron in your supplement.
